Years ago when I read Fred Rogers’ biography, these words from him stood out for me:
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” ”
I saw those helpers today, collecting around a grieving family and surrounding them with love. Literally hundreds of people in our community reached out in their own ways with the gifts they had to offer. Texting, posting, cooking, cleaning, serving, singing, remembering, hugging, talking, laughing, crying.
And those helpers were given a gift, as well. They were allowed to care, to serve, to help.
Out of tragedy and sorrow comes beauty.
