Girl power

Hand me my cape – today I have reached Superhero status.

For the first time in 25 years I mowed our lawn. More accurately, Middle Sister and I mowed the lawn.

Because we forgot this little detail before we carted The Boy back to college, I had to have my brother-in-law come over and give us an inservice last night. Priming, checking the gas, not cutting your fingers off – the basic stuff.

We’ve been enjoying 100 degree Fahrenheit temps over the last week, with heat indexes around 110. So the only safe time to mow was at daybreak. Didn’t sleep for more than half an hour at a time last night, feeling like I had a prison sentence to be imposed at first light.

We actually took a selfie with the mower, but made a pact to share that one only with The Husband and The Boy. Not exactly flattering.

I was out there at 6:45 (my apologies to the neighbors – I’m hoping that since it’s a work day they were up, anyway). My task was the front yard, where we had lovely sod placed last summer…and the nice, lush grass was so long it was bent over and matted. So it needed two passes – one with the mower deck raised high and a second one with it lowered.

Then I handed it off to Middle Sister, who did the much larger back yard, but with only one pass.

There was much cursing and fuming, but we were done by 7:45.

Life lesson learned this morning: things that completely suck can also be incredibly satisfying. I feel like we slayed a dragon this morning. We handled an overwhelming task, and now we can enjoy looking out the window at an attractive yard and knowing we did it.

Winning!
