Bean ball.

I’m not a huge baseball fan, but our hometown team – KC Royals – is doing well again this year, so this analogy came to me…

What do you do when you’ve been hitting home runs and suddenly life doesn’t just throw you a curve ball…but the next pitch is aimed right at your head? The pitch

That’s pretty much what happened to me over the weekend. The pitch found its mark, I went down, and everything went black for awhile.

To be honest, I’ve been hit by a lot of pitches over the course of my married years. This is the latest in a long string of “bean balls.” The thing that sucks the most is that each one hits harder than the last.

The only thing I can think of to do right now to try and recover is to look for small things to smile about. Thank you, April.

Smiling about…

The squirrel on our back porch who stretched himself flat out on the cement and commando crawled (slithered would be a more accurate term) for about ten feet.

Discovering while trying to buy a bottle of wine on a Sunday that the state of Kansas never officially ratified the 21st amendment ending Prohibition. Okay, that’s a wry smile because our state is so incredibly backwards. But a smile nonetheless.

Preschoolers wearing shorts and cowboy boots.

That’s about all I’ve got right now. But I”ll be on the lookout for more smiles today. Self-preservation.

  1. Did you see the pitch coming? When we get dinged by a fast ball it’s hard to not think of anything but what knocked us off our feet. Those moments with the squirrel and the kids with the cowboy boots are a few seconds of reprieve. Enjoy them.
